The Vagus Nerve: Why Your Nervous System Matters for Mental Health

In recent years, the vagus nerve has become one of the most discussed topics in psychology, trauma therapy, and somatic approaches to mental health. While the popular internet often simplifies it into quick “vagus nerve hacks,” the scientific literature tells a more nuanced story. The vagus nerve plays a crucial role in how the body regulates stress, emotional safety, and recovery after threat. Understanding how this system works can help explain why trauma is not only psychological, but also deeply physiological.


What Is the Vagus Nerve?

The vagus nerve is the longest cranial nerve in the body and a key component of the parasympathetic nervous system - the system responsible for rest, recovery, and regulation. It connects the brain to many major organs, including the heart, lungs, and digestive system.

Importantly, about 80% of the nerve fibers in the vagus nerve carry signals from the body to the brain, not the other way around. This means that the brain constantly receives information about the body’s internal state (interoception), which then shapes our emotional experience.


Research shows that vagal activity influences:

  • heart rate regulation

  • emotional regulation

  • social engagement

  • inflammation and immune responses

  • recovery from stress


One common way researchers measure vagal activity is through heart rate variability (HRV) -the variation in time between heartbeats. Higher HRV is generally associated with better emotional regulation and resilience to stress.


The Vagus Nerve and Emotional Safety

Psychologist Stephen Porges introduced the Polyvagal Theory, which proposes that the vagus nerve plays a key role in how humans detect safety or threat in their environment. According to this model, the nervous system constantly scans for cues of safety, danger, or life threat - a process called neuroception.


When the nervous system detects safety, the vagal pathways support:

  • calm physiological states

  • social connection

  • curiosity and exploration

  • emotional openness


However, when the nervous system perceives threat, other systems take over - such as fight-or-flight responses mediated by the sympathetic nervous system. Although some aspects of Polyvagal Theory are still debated within the scientific community, research consistently confirms that vagal tone is strongly associated with emotional regulation, social functioning, and resilience.


Trauma and the Body

Trauma research has increasingly emphasized that traumatic experiences are not stored only as memories or thoughts, but also as patterns of physiological activation. Studies in trauma neuroscience show that individuals with post-traumatic stress symptoms often display:

  • reduced heart rate variability

  • heightened autonomic arousal

  • difficulties returning to baseline after stress


This means that the nervous system remains more easily activated even when external threats are no longer present. In this context, the vagus nerve becomes particularly relevant because it is one of the primary systems responsible for bringing the body back to a regulated state after stress.


Why Somatic Approaches Are Gaining Attention

Because trauma affects both mind and body, many modern therapeutic approaches integrate somatic elements - meaning they work not only with thoughts and emotions, but also with bodily experience.


Examples include:

  • Somatic Experiencing

  • sensorimotor psychotherapy

  • trauma-informed body awareness practices

  • breath-based regulation techniques


Research suggests that interventions that influence vagal activity may help improve emotional regulation and stress recovery. For example, studies have shown that slow diaphragmatic breathing can increase vagal tone and heart rate variability. Similarly, practices that involve body awareness, movement, and controlled breathing may support autonomic regulation, although the mechanisms are still being studied. Importantly, this does not mean that “activating the vagus nerve” is a simple fix for trauma. Psychological processing, relational safety, and cognitive integration remain essential components of effective therapy.


Regulation Is Relational

One of the most robust findings in developmental psychology is that nervous systems develop in relationship with others. Early caregiving relationships shape how the autonomic nervous system learns to regulate stress. Consistent emotional attunement from caregivers helps children develop stronger regulation capacities, including healthier vagal functioning. Conversely, chronic stress, neglect, or trauma can disrupt this regulatory development. This is one reason why therapeutic relationships themselves can be regulating. A safe and attuned therapeutic environment can gradually help the nervous system learn that it is safe to move out of chronic defensive states.


The Bigger Picture

The growing interest in the vagus nerve reflects a broader shift in psychology and trauma research: the recognition that mental health cannot be separated from the body. The nervous system is not simply a background mechanism behind emotions - it is deeply involved in how we experience safety, connection, and recovery. Evidence-based psychotherapy increasingly integrates this understanding, combining cognitive, emotional, and physiological perspectives. Rather than focusing only on thoughts or only on bodily techniques, the most effective approaches recognize that regulation, meaning-making, and relationship all play essential roles in healing.
